Ian Wood explains
Are all racecourses the same?
No. Racecourses differ considerably in their layout, direction, gradients, surfaces and distances. Some are left-handed, others right-handed, while certain courses have both straight and round tracks.
Ascot, for example, has a straight mile course and a right-handed round course, as well as a separate Jump course. Its uphill finish makes it a demanding test of stamina. Understanding the characteristics of individual racecourses can help explain why certain horses perform better at some venues than others.
