What do a horse’s ears tell us?

A horse’s ears are extremely mobile and can swivel almost all the way around. Their position often provides a valuable indication of how the horse is feeling.

Flicking or swivelling ears generally show that the horse is alert and listening. Ears pointing forward suggest interest or concentration, while ears relaxed to the sides usually indicate that the horse is resting or content.

Drooping or uneven ears may indicate tiredness or illness. Ears pinned firmly back can signal anger, irritation, fear or discomfort and may be a warning of possible aggression.

Understanding these signals helps handlers recognise a horse’s mood and respond appropriately.
