Ian Wood explains

When is a horse’s official birthday?

In Britain and throughout the Northern Hemisphere, all racehorses officially become a year older on 1 January, regardless of their actual date of birth. In the Southern Hemisphere, the corresponding date is 1 August.

This ensures that horses are grouped consistently by age for racing purposes.
